Jackie in the garden...

Here Almond is creating a scene with Jackie in the garden observing the wildlife around him while in the mindest of a bird. A very similar scene plays out in the opening chapters of the book.

The perfect ending...

Almond seems to play with an idea for the ending of the story in this section of his notes.

He writes of the need for a 'huge lift at the end', with the dialogue 'we didn't, did we?'

The ending of the book is subtley triumphant, with Jackie and Lizzie failing in the competition, but gaining so much more by achieving happiness and unity in the family.

Conflict between Jackie and Lizzie

This section of David Almond's notes seems to hint at a conflict between Jackie and Lizzie.

In the book, this never occurs, with Lizzie supportive of her Father's exploits throughout.

Dumplings!

Dumplings play a surprisingly big role in the thoughts of Auntie Doreen and the narrative of My Dad's a Birdman.

Here Almond is envisaging the scene of Auntie Doreen throwing a dumpling at Mr Mint.

'No mother, no money, no nothing...'

David Almond's early notes have a tendency to focus on some of the darker apsects of My Dad's a Birdman.

Here he is explicit about the bereavment taking place in the Crow family, as well as their difficult financial situation, sugesting this is a reason for Jackie entering the Great Human Bird Competition.

In the finished book, the prize money is hardly mentioned as a consideration for Jackie entering the competition.

The absence of a Mother figure runs throughout the story, but is never explicitly confronted, rather implied through the mood and behaivour of characters.
